According to statistics from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health, approximately 40% of school aged children read below grade level, with 15% of students in general education having a diagnosis of dyslexia. Students with dyslexia usually experience problems with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words. Dyslexia is referred to as a learning disability because dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment.
